Would-be horse rescuer pleads guilty to animal cruelty
By LEVI PULKKINEN P-I REPORTER
A self-styled horse rescuer pleaded guilty Thursday to four counts of animal cruelty in King County Superior Court.
Charges were filed against Dean Marie Solomon, 49, after animal control officers found eight severely malnourished horses on her Auburn property. Two of the horses were later euthanized due to the severity of their injuries.
According to court records, Solomon admitted to purchasing horsed at auction that would otherwise be taken to Mexico or Canada to be slaughtered. Solomon, who operated the Pacific Equestrian Center, was unable to care for the horses, leaving several without veterinary care.
"I tried to save more horses than I was really able to given my property and resources," Solomon said in court documents. "I did this with good intentions but I acknowledge that … my horses suffered unnecessary physical pain as a result of my failure."
Prosecutors have asked that Solomon be sentenced to 240 hours of community service and barred from possessing horses until she shows the court she can care for them. She is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 5.

Just another notch in Dean Solomon's long history of avoiding responsibility for her actions. I suppose that ultimately the universe provides justice for people like Dean. She has an awful lot of bad karma to overcome. seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2008361824_dige07m.htmlAuburn woman guilty in horse case An Auburn woman who police say abused eight horses pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree animal cruelty, a misdemeanor. Dean Solomon, 49, faces a suspended sentence in exchange for community service when she is sentenced Dec. 5 at the Norm Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent. The terms of the plea agreement say Solomon will be allowed to keep four horses but must let King County Animal Control see the animals. Animal Control was called to Solomon's property, Pacific Equestrian Center, in February after a veterinarian found six horses who were extremely thin and had lice, court papers said. Two addition horses were so ill they had to be euthanized, court papers said. Animal-control officials said they received several complaints about mistreatment, the condition of the property and other problems.

Only 240 hours... that's three hours for every horse that was found on her property, not accounting for the ones that were fortunate (or unfortunate) enough to move on.
Smells like plea deal.

Of course it is a plea deal. There was never any doubt in my mind that this would happen.

You all seem to be forgetting that Dean wasn't in this alone. Anyone who went to PEC and didn't try to help is just as guilty. And no, I don't mean "help" by calling AC. I mean help as in trying to help her care for and place the horses since she obviously had too many.
I'm not saying she herself is not guilty, I'm just wondering why all the people who spent time there, only pointed fingers instead of helping. This includes SAM who sent to minions over there to trespass and take pictures.

Well I think it is important that we are all more informed than we were 2 to 3 years ago about this and can keep an eye out for others who struggle with the same problems, and hopefully help the see the light.

Well said pals....For those who have put blinders on, take them off and help when you see it...Be it a neighbor or the person trying to place their horse... You need not be mean...Find out what they need and do your best...Giving of oneself is easy, try it...Money, money, money...Our lord doesn't count pennies at the pearly gates...And NO wooden nickles... Now the rest of us with rescues...Look around, if something changes in your life can you make it....For me, sorry NO... I saw this months ago, no home offers and if something happens to one or both of us the horses will suffer... Thinking here, Oh lord help us all....chatty

Hey gals...i just have to share the best deanism that i fell for because i totally laugh at myself that i fell for it...
one of the horses i saved from there in 2006 had a horrendous knee. when i went there to see him, ______ told me (i am not naming this person as she seems to be back and forth with dean, not sure she has made up her mind yet) he hadnt been out of the barn in months and she was nervous to bring him out as he would "go ballistic when he saw sunlight" (threw the door at the end of the aisle). without even seeing the horse ('course i couldnt see him standing in the aisle as it was so dark in his stall) i agreed to take him when she told me that. Here is the lie i am embarrassed to admit i actually beleived. dean told me she had raised $7000 for his knee surgery (so far) and the full set of pre-operative radiographs were on file with dr. sneider in pullman. the lie was so full of detail, she told me of the consultation, the surgery proposed, the whole thing....i thought to myself with all this detail it had to be true...yup, i made a fool of myself and called over to pullman and wasted Dr. Sneider's time and asked about radiographs and a surgery proposal that never existed...
how embarrassing...
on the bright side, the horse was an absolute delight and never once did he ever even be anything than a perfect gentleman. he was eventually adopted out thru another rescue...
i am glad i have shared this, gave me a chance to sit hera and daydream about that great horse...hhmmmmm.....

I mean help as in trying to help her care for and place the horses since she obviously had too many. . I see your point. What I think gets missed with hoarders is that you can go in and help, and remove horses, and place horses.....but the hoarder will just go out and get more. For Dean Solomon, the initial thrill of "rescue" (complete with message board accolades --- people actually calling her "Our Fearless Leader!") is a drug so compelling that she cannot go without it. The drug wears off after the horse has been there a while. Then she must go and get more new horses, for yet another "rescue" high. You could have pulled horses from her all you wanted, and still she would have acquired more to fill their spaces. She's very sick, and addicted to the rescue rush.

Can we all say Sociopath....
Psychopaths, unlike people with major mental disorders such as schizophrenia, can seem quite normal and even charming, thus earning the descriptive term for the condition "mask of sanity." Psychopaths do not suffer from grossly psychotic symptoms, such as hallucinations or delusions, unless they also suffer from another major mental disorder. But people who lack empathy and guilt, who are willing to manipulate, lie, or cheat without hesitation or remorse to achieve their own ends, are so interpersonally and behaviorally abnormal that characterizing the condition as a disorder seems justifiable.

you nailed it watermark. i think this is what the court doesnt understand is that just because THEY say she has to stay at four doesnt mean she will. she has been given numbers to stick to for years and never complied...why would she now? many times they dont even know where to look for horses to count them. i found that so frustrating when the numbers were never consistant from counter to counter...its like the horses were just a number and no one really knew how many there were (are). throw up a no trespassing sign and complicate things even more...
is everyone here e-mailing the PA like she requested?
